Mello Yellow Dramatic - The Electric Gentlemen

Well, once again, you losers produced something interesting.

I'm not sure if these dudes are listening to fugazi and rights of spring or just beating off to the sound of Led Zeppelin and Jet all day long in between bong hits. Wait...now I am pretty sure that it is the latter.

The lyrics fucking suck. They do. Just a sporadic spray of meaningless rock and roll diarrhea coming right out of the dudes mouth.

Because of the stellar production, it is even more apparent that these dudes are tenaciously steadfast and unyielding in taking those same two rhythm licks, playing them, then some masterbatory guitar soloing, then they just throw that same shit that they've been playing right back down on the table, as if they think no-body is gonna fucking notice.

Overall, in between yawns, I was a little bit pissed off, and a little bit disappointed, as these guys can obviously play their instruments. They just can't bring anything worthwhile to the table. It's like someone tearing out all the exciting parts from a detective novel, and all that is left is just fifty pages of some dude drinking coffee and brooding.

1/5 keep 'em coming dudes, just stop sucking.
Meh

  1. Hey,

    Bassist / keyboardist here.

First off, thanks for the review. It's odd to see any discussion about our music whatsoever, and we appreciate any criticism. This album was recorded for fun, and we didn't have any expectations or standards to hold ourselves to.

Melloyellodramatic was recorded a month after we cut loose an old "singer" and reformed with a new "interim singer" (featured on the album.) He didn't really intend to stick with the band, so we took his role fairly lightly and didn't put enough time into exposing him to our sound and adjusting his voice to our style. That aside, I'm not sure exactly how much of a "style" we had at the time - as soon as we went down to a trio-plus-new-singer, our direction shifted entirely. Our sound just took a while to move in that direction. We rushed through the recording sessions, and every member of the band wasn't entirely present - most tracks were recorded without the singer, and we would write lyrics / vocal lines between his work shifts. Also, we were high school kids, and somehow thought that recording a whole album before finals week would be a fantastic idea. Overall, I feel that there were a few great tracks, but they were weighed down by a good deal of filler. Some songs just didn't have the time to develop too.

I think this album is a funny little snapshot at where we were a year ago. Things have changed, and we have another new singer who replaced the "interim" singer after his departure. The new singer's voice fits into our instrumental sound much more appropriately than Nick's (the singer on Melloyellodramatic) and we've more or less settled on this lineup. In retrospect, Melloyellodramatic doesn't hold up quite well, but I still like Crimson Caravan, Headin' West and Saint Lawrence Seaway, and hope that it's not an artistic crime to rerecord them. We'll have a new album out in 2012. It'll be better.

Once again, thanks for the review.
